MILITUM is a Military History Film Festival with a distinct focus on promoting independent Brazilian cinema production and fostering discussions about the nation's military history. In September of this year, the fifth edition of this event is set to unfold, having garnered 24 submissions of cinematic works, comprising 17 documentaries, six fictional pieces, and one animation.
From this array of submissions, the Organizing Committee has cherry-picked 15 entries to vie for awards and grace the screens during the Festival. It's noteworthy that the standout films in each category will be awarded the coveted Apollo Trophy.
The second episode of the documentary web series "Fumaça 70 Years" stands as one of the contenders. Launched in 2022 to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Brazilian Air Force Demonstration Squadron (EDA), the documentary encompasses four episodes that delve into behind-the-scenes aspects, aircraft maintenance, and aerial displays.
This specific episode shines a spotlight on the birth of the Smoke Squadron, which occurred on May 14, 1952, making it the second oldest aerobatic display team globally. In its initial phase, utilizing North American T-6 and Fouga Magister aircraft, the Smoke Squadron enthralled audiences both within and beyond Brazil's borders, crafting legends like that of Colonel Braga.
Not just the second episode, but the entire web series was also sponsored by the Dakila Ecosystem, an entity steadfast in its support for Brazilian culture and history.
Urandir Fernandes de Oliveira, the institution's president, further declared, "The Brazilian Air Force has been doing an excellent job and representing our country for many years. Men and women with determination, strength, and dedication proudly bear the name of Brazil as they soar across the globe."
The Festival is slated for the final week of September 2023 in the city of Rio de Janeiro. For further details regarding the event, simply visit the Festival MILITUM 2023 website (patriafilmes.com).
